Background
The proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is a 36 kDa protein and is a cofactor of DNA polymerase delta. PCNA acts as a homotrimer and helps increase the processivity of leading strand synthesis during DNA replication. In response to DNA damage, this protein is ubiquitinated and is involved in the RAD6-dependent DNA repair pathway. PCNA is synthesized in early G1 and S phases of the cell cycle and serve as an excellent marker for proliferating cells. In early S phase, PCNA exhibits a very granular distribution and is absent from the nucleus, while in late S phase, it is prominent in the nucleoli. |
