Growth factors promote cellular differentiation and proliferation. They act on target tissues and regulate processes including tissue morphogenesis, angiogenesis, cell differentiation, and neurite outgrowth.
They are essential growth-regulatory molecules for cell culture maintenance. Non-transformed cells show an absolute requirement for growth factors for maintenance in cell culture and for most cell types, more than one type of growth factor is required. Under cell culture conditions, growth factors are the most rapidly depleted media components and thus become a rate-limiting factor for further proliferation. Commonly used growth factors in tissue engineering include fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), vascular epithelial growth factors (VEGFs), and transforming growth factors-β (TGF-βs). The loss or decreased level of growth factors is common in neoplastically transformed cells and may lead to an uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
