Background Information
BPIL3 (Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein-like 3), also known as BPIFB6 (BPI fold-containing family B member 6), belongs to the lipid transfer (LT)/lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding protein family. LT/LBP proteins are capable of binding phospholipids and LPS. Expression of BPIL3 gene was detected at very low levels in normal tonsils, and at high levels in hypertrophic tonsils (PMID: 12185532). BPIL3 may play a role in innate immunity.
