Background Information
BTNL8 (butyrophilin-like 8) belongs to the butyrophilin (BTN) family, a group of immunoglobulin superfamily members structurally and functionally related to the B7 family of immune costimulatory molecules. The protein is predicted to localize to the plasma membrane and is involved in T cell receptor signaling and regulation of cytokine production. It is highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the duodenum and small intestine, as well as in the colon and rectum.BTNL8 is also expressed in neutrophils. Functionally, BTNL8 plays a role in modulating immune responses. It can augment antigen-induced activation of T lymphocytes, promoting T-cell proliferation and cytokine production.(PMID:24036152)
