Background Information

PRG2, also known as BMPG, has 222 amino acid residues with a 16 N-terminal signal sequence, so the mature form has 206 amino acid residues. High levels of PRG2 are present in placenta and pregnancy serum, where it exists as a complex with several other proteins including pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPPA), angiotensinogen (AGT), and C3dg. This protein can be cleaved into eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP), which is the major constituent of the crystalline core of the eosinophil granule. MBP is highly basic and toxic to both mammalian cells and parasites, and it functions in the defense against invading parasites (PMID: 21270431).
