ATP5G3 encodes subunit 9 (ATPase subunit c), which is a subunit of the multi-subunit enzyme that catalyzes ATP synthesis during oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. ATP synthase is composed of two linked multi-subunit complexes: the soluble catalytic core, F1, and the membrane-spanning component, Fo, comprising the proton channel. The subunit c is a component of the proton channel proteins in the F0 portion of the enzyme.
