Microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1 (MGST1) is a membrane-bound transferase involved in exogenous detoxification and protection of cells from oxidative stress. MGST1 is mainly localized in the mitochondria, the plasma membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The active form of MGST1 is a noncovalently associated homotrimer that binds one substrate glutathione molecule/trimer (PMID: 14726533; PMID: 11101503). The theoretical molecular weight of MGST1 is 17 kDa, and its homomeric molecular weight is 51-53 kDa.
