Informations générales
Integrins are cell adhesion receptors that are heterodimers composed of non-covalently associated α and β subunits (PMID: 9779984). Integrin alpha 9 contains a large N-terminal extracellular domain with 7 conserved repeats of putative metal-binding domains, a transmembrane segment, and a short C-terminal cytoplasmic tail (PMID: 8245132). Integrin alpha 9 interacts with integrin beta 1 generating α9β1 heterodimer, which is expressed in many cell types including epithelial cells, neutrophils, hepatocytes, muscle and endothelial cells (PMID: 21975548). It binds to a diversity of ligands in the extracellular matrix, like the a-disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) family, THBS1, EMILIN1, VEGF, tenascin-C, osteopontin, fibronectin, and VCAM1 (PMID: 21975548; 33790909). Integrin α9β1 has been implicated in diverse biological functions including angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, lymphatic valve morphogenesis, granulopoiesis and tumorigenesis (PMID: 20179422).
