Background Information
ACAT1 and ACAT2 are intracellular enzymes that convert free cholesterol to cholesteryl esters and play important roles in lipid metabolism. ACAT1 is widely expressed while ACAT2 is primarily expressed in intestine and liver. As the major ACAT isozyme in macrophages, ACTA1 plays an key role in foam cell formation and atherosclerosis, making it an appealing drug target for treating cardiovascular diseases. Recently it has been reported that ACTA1 is commonly activated by upregulated tetramerization in human cancers and is a promising anti-cancer target.
