RSAD2 (radical S-adenosyl methionine domain-containing protein 2), also known as CIG5 (cytomegalovirus-induced gene 5 protein), vig1, viperin or CIG33, displays antiviral effect against HIV-1 virus, hepatitis C virus, human cytomegalovirus, and aphaviruses. Expression of the protein can be induced by interferon. Western blot analysis of IFNG-treated cells revealed 43 kD/35kd bands.

Viperin interacts with the kinase IRAK1 and the E3 ubiquitin ligase TRAF6, coupling innate immune signaling to antiviral ribonucleotide synthesis.
Viperin, through its radical-SAM activity, depletes cellular nucleotide pools and interferes with mitochondrial metabolism to inhibit viral replication.
