Background
Thrombopoietin (TPO) is a primary regulator of megakaryocyte development and platelet production in mammals. Human TPO constitutively circulates and maintains thrombopoiesis through interaction with its cognate receptor, myeloproliferative leukemia protein(MPL). TPO also plays an important role in the maintenance and regulation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Germline mutations of THPO were reported as causes of hereditary thrombocythemia.
