Background
Lumican is a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) family whose expression involves many organ/tissue systems, e.g., cornea, sclera, aorta, cartilage, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas, brain, placenta, lung, etc. Lumican is an ECM matrikine that regulates multiple cellular activities and also has anti-MMP activity, anti-tumor activity, and promotes corneal epithelial wound healing, regulating gene expression and maintaining corneal homeostasis. Furthermore, Lumican is expressed in various cancer tissues and is reported to have a positive or negative correlation with tumor progression.
