Background Information
The COL2A1 gene encodes the alpha-1 chain of type II collagen, a fibrillar collagen found primarily in cartilage and the vitreous humor of the eye. Type II collagen is essential for the formation of the extracellular matrix in cartilage and other connective tissues, providing structure and strength to these tissues. The 200 kDa band is in the form of highly glycosylated procollagen (PMID: 33043724), and the 130-140 kDa band may be mature body protein, excision signal peptide and propeptide, and there are also other fragments or degradation bands of this protein (PMID: 41323462), such as 117 kDa (PMID: 42178419).
