Background
DEFB119, also known as defensin beta 119, is a protein that belongs to the beta subfamily of defensins. These are antimicrobial peptides that play a critical role in protecting tissues and organs from infection by a variety of microorganisms. The DEFB119 gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 20 and is part of a cluster of other beta-defensin genes. This protein has been shown to have antibacterial activity and is involved in the innate immune response, particularly in the defence against bacteria, including both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, and fungi.
