Background
Neuroplastin (Nptn) is a member of the Ig superfamily and is expressed in two isoforms, Np55 and Np65. Np65 contains three Ig domains (Ig1, Ig2, Ig3). Np55 contains only two (Ig2, Ig3). Np65 regulates synaptic transmission, but the function of Np55 is unknown. Expression of the 65 kD neuroplastin (Np65) isoform derived by alternative splicing from the Nptn gene is restricted to brain neurons, whereas the 55 kD isoform (Np55) is present in most cell types but not in glia.
