Background Information
NOX5 (NADPH oxidase, EF-hand calcium binding domain 5) is an NADPH oxidase that generates superoxide and functions as an H+ channel in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner. It plays an important role in PDGF-induced JAK/STAT activation and human aortic smooth muscle cell (HASMC) proliferation. NOX5 is the main source of superoxide and is implicated in human spermatozoa motility. This protein has 6 isoforms produced by alternative splicing, named NOX5-α, -β, -γ, -δ, -ε and -ζ with the molecular mass of 84, 82, 86, 85, 64 and 83 kDa (PMID: 22427510 and Uniprot).
