Background Information
UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A9 (UGT1A9) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the glucuronidation pathway. It transforms small lipophilic molecules, such as steroids, bilirubin, hormones, and drugs, into water-soluble, excretable metabolites. UGT1A9 is part of a complex locus that encodes several UDP-glucuronosyltransferases. The enzyme is active on phenols and is involved in the metabolism of various drugs and endogenous compounds (PMID: 15284532; 12181437; 18004212).
