Background Information
UGT3A1 (UDP Glycosyltransferase Family 3 Member A1) belongs to UDP-Glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) superfamily. UGTs are membrane-bound enzymes localized at the subcellular level in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) with an active site facing the lumenal side of the ER membrane. The genetic variation in UGT enzymes can modulate its regulation and expression, influencing UGT activity and resulting in pharmacological and physiologic effects. UGT3 family enzymes (UGT3A1 and UGT3A2) are expressed in the thymus, testis, and kidney, with a potential role in the metabolism of ursodeoxycholic acid during the treatment of cholestasis or gallstones.
