Background Information

C‑peptide is a 31‑amino‑acid peptide that connects the A and B chains of proinsulin and is co‑secreted with insulin in equimolar amounts from pancreatic beta cells. With a longer plasma half‑life than insulin, it serves as a reliable biomarker of endogenous insulin secretion. Clinically, measuring C‑peptide is crucial for distinguishing type 1 from type 2 diabetes, diagnosing hypoglycemia, and assessing residual beta‑cell function. Emerging evidence also suggests that C‑peptide may exert its own biological effects on vascular and renal tissues.
