Background Information

Ataxin-1 (ATXN1) is a protein involved in transcriptional regulation and RNA binding. It is a transcriptional repressor that interacts with multiple transcription factors and is associated with large protein complexes. ATXN1 is also involved in the regulation of alternative splicing, as demonstrated by its ability to regulate the splicing of several minigenes. The protein is crucial for normal cerebellar function and is implicated in the pathogenesis of spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), a neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of a polyglutamine tract in ATXN1 (PMID: 21475249; 20628574).
