Background Information

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is a pluripotent neurocytokine. The functional receptor complex of CNTF is composed of the CNTF receptor alpha (CNTFR), gp130 and the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) (PMID: 11943154). Binding of CNTF to CNTFR recruits gp130 and LIFR, which leads to activation of JAK/STAT and Ras/Raf/MAPK pathways.
