Background Information

DNAAF2 (Dynein Axonemal Assembly Factor 2) is a cytoplasmic protein involved in the assembly and maturation of outer dynein arms (ODAs) in ciliary and flagellar axonemes. DNAAF2 cooperates with DNAAF1, DNAAF3, and other factors to mediate the transport of dynein precursors from the cytoplasm to the ciliary base, and promotes the proper folding and localization of dynein complexes at the axonemal assembly site. Mutations in the DNAAF2 gene cause primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), characterized by chronic respiratory tract infections, situs inversus, and male infertility, due to defective mucociliary clearance resulting from impaired ciliary motility.
