Background Information
EIF2C4, also named as AGO4 and KIAA1567, belongs to the argonaute family and Ago subfamily. It is required for RNA-mediated gene silencing (RNAi). EIF2C4 binds to short RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and represses the translation of mRNAs which are complementary to them. EIF2C4 lacks endonuclease activity and does not appear to cleave target mRNAs. It is also required for RNA-directed transcription and replication of the human hapatitis delta virus (HDV).
