Background Information

EXOC8 is a subunit of the exocyst complex involved in docking exocytic vesicles with fusion sites on the plasma membrane. Truncated EXOC8 protein leads to the improper assembly of the exocyst complex, thus resulting in the accumulation of neurotransmitters and other excretory vesicles in the cell. It is found to play an essential role in normal cortical development and its perturbation causes complex brain disorders. EXOC8 mutations are linked to neurodevelopmental disorders with microcephaly, seizures, and brain atrophy (PMID: 35460391, PMID: 36344539).
