Background Information

The guanylate cyclase-activating proteins (GCAPs), Ca2+-binding proteins of the calmodulin gene superfamily, function as regulators of photoreceptor guanylate cyclases (PMID: 15336959). Three different GCAPs (GCAP1, GCAP2, and GCAP3) are identified in vertebrate retina (PMID: 12596930). The cone-specific guanylate cyclase-activating protein 3 (GCAP3) has been shown to regulate the enzymatic activity of membrane-bound guanylate cyclases (GCs) in bovine and teleost fish photoreceptors, to an extent comparable to that of the paralog protein GCAP1 (PMID: 35328663).
