Background Information
HOXC13 is a member of HOX proteins. The HOX family includes 39 paralogous proteins expressed from the HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, and HOXD gene clusters, and these function early in embryonic development to establish cell and tissue identity and to regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival (PMID: 30974835). Human HOXC13, which is expressed in the hair follicle and nail matrix, is involved in the regulation of keratin gene expression (PMID: 11714694). Mutations in human HOXC13 cause ectodermal dysplasia 9, a severe defect of hair and nails (PMID: 23063621).
