Background Information
HTR3A (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3A, 5-HT3A) belongs to the ligand-gated ion channel receptor superfamily. It is the subunit A of the type 3 receptor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin), a biogenic hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and a mitogen. So far, five distinct 5-HT3 receptor subunits (A-E) have been identified. HTR3A can form functional homomers or heteromers with HTR3B or HTR3C or HTR3D or HTR3E. 5-HT3 receptors are capable of mediating fast excitatory neurotransmission in the CNS and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
