Background Information
NAGK, also called N-acetylglucosamine kinase, or GlcNAc kinase, converts endogenous N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a major component of complex carbohydrates, from lysosomal degradation or nutritional sources into GlcNAc 6-phosphate. NAGK can suppress the formation of α-syn A53T aggregates in neuronal and non-neuronal cells and suggest aggregation suppression is a general function of NAGK (PMID: 32796833). NAGK is broadly expressed in immune cells and has previously been described to contribute to the hexosamine biosynthetic salvage pathway (PMID: 36002575).
