Background Information
The sialic acids are a family of 9-carbon 2-keto-3-deoxy sugars. They are frequently the terminal sugars on secreted and cell surface glycoproteins and glycolipids. Sialic acids participate in many important biologic recognition events. NANS can also use N-acetylmannosamine 6-phosphate and mannose 6-phosphate as substrates to generate phosphorylated forms of Neu5Ac and KDN, respectively.
