Background Information

SLC11A1 also known as NRAMP1, belongs to the SLC11 family of solute carriers, which mediate the transport of divalent metals. NRAMP1 is a divalent metal importer specifically expressed in the membranes of late endosomes/lysosomes of professional phagocytes. It plays a crucial role in the defense against intracellular pathogens by depleting essential metal ions from endocytosed microbes, thereby preventing their proliferation(PMID: 24832660, PMID: 39824808).
