Background Information

OTOG (Otogelin) is a glycoprotein that is highly expressed in the inner ear and is essential for maintaining hearing and balance functions. It belongs to the mucin-like glycoprotein family and is a large extracellular matrix protein with numerous glycosylation sites. This allows it to form gel-like structures that provide structural support during mechanical transduction in the inner ear. Mutations or loss of function in the OTOG gene can lead to severe hereditary deafness and vestibular dysfunction. There are two isoforms of OTOG, with molecular weights of 160 kDa and 314 kDa respectively.
