Background Information
The PLA2G3 protein (full name: Phospholipase A2 Group III) is a member of the secreted phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) family. It is a calcium-dependent secretory protein whose primary biochemical function is to catalyze the hydrolysis of the sn-2 position of phospholipids, releasing arachidonic acid and lysophospholipids. It is an enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids and lipid metabolism, playing important roles in the development and progression of innate immunity, inflammatory diseases (such as asthma and psoriasis), atherosclerosis, and certain cancers (such as colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer).
