Background Information
RNF183, or Ring Finger Protein 183, is a member of the RING finger protein family that functions as a ubiquitin ligase. RNF183 exhibits tissue-specific expression patterns, with higher expression levels in the gall bladder, kidney, and other tissues. RNF183 expression levels are increased in patients with IBD, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (PMID: 32486221). It promotes intestinal inflammation by increasing the ubiquitination and degradation of IkappaBalpha, thereby inducing NF-kappaB activation (PMID: 31889078). RNF183 has also been implicated in other conditions such as chronic kidney disease and Alzheimer's disease.
