Background Information
SLC26A4 encodes an 86-kDa transmembrane protein named pendrin with up to 15 predicted membrane-spanning domains (PMID: 22116369). SLC26A4 is necessary for normal reabsorption of endolymph, the fluid bathing the inner ear. (PMID: 31599023, PMID: 39383236). In the endolymphatic sac, where fluid reabsorption occurs, SLC26A4 is localized along the apical microvilli of mitochondria-rich cells, in contact with the endolymph, and associated with clathrin-coated pits where μ2 and AP-2 are present (PMID: 39383236). SLC26A4 encodes an anion transporter transmembrane protein, pendrin, which is expressed in the thyroid, kidney, and cochlea (PMID: 23185506).
