Background Information
SYCE2 (synaptonemal complex central element protein 2) is a structural component of the synaptonemal complex (SC) that is essential for meiotic chromosome synapsis and homologous recombination during meiosis. SYCE2 localizes to the central element of the synaptonemal complex, where it interacts with other SC proteins, including SYCE1, SYCE3, and TEX12, to promote assembly and stabilization of the central region. Through these interactions, SYCE2 facilitates homologous chromosome pairing, meiotic crossover formation, and accurate chromosome segregation, thereby ensuring normal gametogenesis and fertility. Deficiency or mutation of SYCE2 disrupts synaptonemal complex formation, resulting in defective meiosis, germ cell apoptosis, and infertility.
