Background Information
B4GALT6 encodes for a type II membrane-bound glycoprotein, which plays a crucial role in lactosylceramide synthesis by transferring galactose from UDP-galactose to glucosylceramide. B4GALT6 in astrocytes boosts CNS inflammation and promote neurodegeneration during chronic CNS inflammation (PMID: 25216636). Abnormal interactions of glycosyltransferases/glycosidases such as B4GALT6 can cause imbalances in key glycosylation modifications, thereby driving the disease process through a triple cascade reaction (PMID: 41112602).
