Background Information
CAAP1 (Caspase Activity and Apoptosis Inhibitor 1), also known as C9orf82, is an evolutionarily conserved anti-apoptotic protein. It inhibits apoptosis by interfering with the activation of caspase-10, thereby blocking the feedback amplification loop of caspase-3/9 in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Recent studies have revealed that CAAP1 plays a dual role in the regulation of autophagy, balancing the processes of autophagy and apoptosis. In tumor biology, the expression level of CAAP1 is associated with chemotherapy resistance in various cancers, making it a potential prognostic biomarker. In addition, CAAP1 is involved in neuroprotective mechanisms and plays an important role in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury by regulating neuronal apoptosis. Its expression is finely regulated by non-coding RNA networks, including MKL1/miR-5100 and miR-184-5p. (PMID: 30629682)
