Background Information
Connexin-50 (Cx50), also known as Gap junction alpha 8 protein (GJA8), belongs to the connexin family. Connexins are membrane-spanning proteins that assemble to form gap junction channels that facilitate the transfer of ions and small molecules between cells. Connexin-50 is expressed in lens fiber cells and is essential for the normal physiological function of the lens (PMID: 11916859). Together with Connexin-46, Connexin-50 forms functional half-gap junction channels in non-junctional membranes. The expected molecular weight of Connexin-50 is 50 kDa, and in some literature, Connexin-50 was detected in lens samples at ~65 kDa (PMID: 31195409; PMID: 29196765).
