Background Information

Gabrp (gamma-aminobutyric acid type a receptor pi subunit) is a subunit of gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABAAR) and belongs to the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily. GABAAR is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor in the central nervous system, which consists of five subunits, usually including the combination of α, β, γ, δ, ε, θ, π or ρ subunits. GABRP belongs to GABAAR gene family. The commonness of this family is that GABA(γ- aminobutyric acid) mediates chloride influx, which leads to hyperpolarization of neurons and thus inhibits nerve excitability. GABRP is mainly expressed in non-nerve tissues, such as uterus, ovary, breast and pancreas, but it is also expressed at a low level in some brain regions. The mutation or abnormal expression of GABRP may be related to diseases, for example, GABRP is often overexpressed in breast cancer, which may promote tumor progression by affecting cell proliferation and migration.
