Background Information

The GRID2 gene provides instructions for making a protein called the glutamate receptor ionotropic, delta-2 subunit (GluD2) . While it belongs to the family of ionotropic glutamate receptors, which are proteins that respond to the neurotransmitter glutamate by opening an ion channel, GluD2 is unique. It is often referred to as an "orphan" receptor because it does not bind glutamate or function as a typical ion channel. Instead, its primary roles are structural and organizational, critical for the development, maintenance, and function of specific synapses in the brain.
