Background
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is an important component of the major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) molecule that is expressed on the surface of almost all nucleated cells. B2M has been suggested as an emerging biomarker for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, and mortality. B2M also complexes with many non-classical MHC-I like molecules such as CD1, MR1, HLA-E, -F, -G and neonatal Fc receptor that are involved in mucosal immunity, tumour surveillance, immunoglobulin and albumin homeostasis.
