Background
The orexigenic neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), a product of PMCH, is an important mediator of energy homeostasis. PMCH is expressed predominantly in neurons of the lateral hypothalamic area and the incerto hypothalamic area, which project throughout the brain. PMCH is also expressed in some peripheral tissues, such as the testes, although at lower levels than in the brain. PMCH plays an important role in determining energy balance during early development.
