Background
SERPINF2 (Serpin Family F Member 2), also known as alpha-2-antifibrinolysis (alpha-2 antiplasmin, AAP), is a member of the serine protease inhibitor (Serpin) superfamily. This protein is a major inhibitor of fibrinolytic enzymes, which degrade fibronectin and various other proteins. Thus, SERPINF2 has an important role in the regulation of the blood coagulation pathway. Mutations in SERPINF2 can lead to alpha-2-fibrinolytic inhibitor deficiency, which is characterized by a severe bleeding tendency and is associated with the development of a variety of diseases including cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, and certain inflammatory disorders.
