Background Information
Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) is a calcium-dependent (type C) serum lectin protein that is synthesized in the liver and circulates in the blood. It plays the role of a pattern recognition receptor in the innate immune system. It can recognize the carbohydrate structures on the surface of microorganisms and activate the lectin complement pathway through serine proteases related to mannan-binding lectins (MASPs), thereby achieving phagocytosis and inflammatory responses without the involvement of antibodies.(PMID: 16948640; 16395391)
