Background Information

MCUR1 (Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter Regulator 1), also known as CCDC90A, is a key regulator of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) complex, which mediates calcium entry into the mitochondrial matrix. Loss of MCUR1 impairs mitochondrial Ca²⁺ uptake, reduces basal oxygen consumption and ATP generation, activates AMPK, and induces macroautophagy. MCUR1 is overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma and triple-negative breast cancer, where its upregulation promotes tumor survival, proliferation, and correlates with poor prognosis.
