Background Information
Mohawk (Mkx) is a member of the Three Amino Acid Loop Extension (TALE) superclass of atypical homeobox genes. It encodes a transcriptional repressor that is expressed in the embryonic precursors of skeletal muscle, tendon, cartilage, and bone. This gene is highly conserved across species and is known to be involved in the differentiation and maintenance of these tissues.
