Background
Endothelial cell specific molecule 1 (ESM1), also known as endocan, is a secreted protein that is involved in endothelium-dependent pathological disorders. ESM1 is overexpressed in various tumors such as lung cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma as well as ovarian cancer and overexpression of ESM1 is reported to induce tumor formation through regulating cell proliferation and facilitating tumor growth. ESM1 function is mainly associated with inflammatory response, angiogenesis and tumor cell growth.
