Background
IL-18 Binding Protein (IL18BP) is a soluble protein that acts as a natural antagonist of interleukin-18 (IL-18), a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in immune responses. It binds to IL-18 with high affinity, preventing IL-18 from interacting with its receptors (IL-18Rα and IL-18Rβ) and thus inhibiting its biological activity. This regulation is crucial for maintaining immune homeostasis and preventing excessive inflammation. IL18BP is a biomarker for disease activity and severity, as well as a therapeutic target in cancer immunotherapy.
