Background Information
TAFA1, also named as FAM19A1, is a secreted protein that belongs to a small family of cytokines characterized by a conserved FAFA (FAM19 and TAFA) structural domain. It is predominantly expressed in specific regions of the central nervous system, particularly the brain. Functionally, TAFA1 acts as a chemokine-like factor, playing a crucial role in regulating immune cell migration and activation within the brain, thereby contributing to neuroimmune communication. Furthermore, growing evidence highlights its significance in various pathological processes, including modulating neuroinflammation, influencing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, and even exhibiting context-dependent roles in certain cancers. TAFA1/FAM19A1 can be detected as about 15 kDa.
